The NIV translation is not my favorite (in fact, it is my least favorite version, but that is another story). But this week I read a section that really expresses my honor for my mother, Ruth Lawrence, and my wife of nearly 47 years (next month). Doreen and my Mom are examples of the kind of sincere love described here. I offer this as my Mother’s Day tribute to Mom and Doreen, and as a blessing that washes down to my beloved daughters who themselves are now mothers. Thank you Lord Jesus for the wealth of love showered on me by these “mothers in Israel.”
Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Romans 12:9-13
Of course, we men must realize that this standard of behavior applies to men as well. May we all continue to walk together as heirs of the grace of life in Jesus, our redeemer.
“Redeemed how I love to proclaim it!”
