Syria On the Brink

12 07 2011

Yesterday a pro-government mob attacked and actually broke into the US Embassy in Damascus, Syria. They also attacked the French Embassy but were repelled using live fire. So where was the security for the US? US embassy staff sheltered in a fortified wing of the mission as pro-Assad militiamen wrecked the mission’s equipment raised the Syrian flag and smeared offensive graffiti on the walls while Syrian security forces stood by and did nothing. (Debka File report). Hillary Clinton castigated the Syrians for not protecting our Embassy! We have Marines there, why did they not defend it? Any embassy is sovereign territory. The United States was invaded and we let them in? Events are unfolding at such a rapid pace that we have trouble keeping up. Our media hardly notices. Last Friday, a half million Syrians demonstrated against their dictator and it was not news here. That followed a 300,000 strong protest the Friday before. Bashir Assad will not go quietly. Unlike others, he has no real friends to take him in and will probably fight to the death. He may wrap himself in the Palestinian flag and attack Israel to save his government.

Now our embassy is attacked by his henchmen. What will happen next? I confess no knowledge of the political choices coming, but I do know exactly what the Bible says will be the final result. Damascus will be destroyed and not be inhabited anymore. It is the oldest (5,000 years) continuously inhabited capital city in the world with some two million residents. It has never been destroyed! Jerusalem has been destroyed at least eleven times. Many prophecies for today are explained away as having already been fulfilled. That device does not work here. How does Damascus fall?

Psalm 83 outlines a war that is about to take place. The invaders are specifically named. When their ancient geographic boundaries are overlaid on the modern nations it includes Gaza, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon and possibly Iraq. Add to this the prophecies of Gaza’s destruction and you have the ingredients for a serious conflict. It is not a stretch to see the destruction of Damascus occurring in this scenario. Here are two of the prophecies:

The burden against Damascus. “Behold, Damascus will cease from being a city, And it will be a ruinous heap. Isaiah 17:1

Damascus has grown feeble; she turns to flee, and fear has seized her. Anguish and sorrows have taken her like a woman in labor. Why is the city of praise not deserted, the city of My joy? Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day,” says Yehovah of hosts. “I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the palaces of Ben-Hadad.” Jeremiah 49:24-27

Pray for mercy for the people of Syria, that they will turn to Yehovah God and Yeshua ben Yehovah, His Son.
