We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
Have you ever considered the first phrase of the Declaration? There are three distinct thoughts: We hold – these truths – self-evident. We hold on, closely, without compromise, to these certain truths. We consider them to be obvious, self-evident. The evidence of their truth is clearly embodied in the very speaking of them.
Self-evident truth is a little like the humorous phrase: “Common sense is not as common as it used to be.” Actually, that quote originated with Voltaire: “Common sense is not so common.” However, we are talking about transcendent truth that is higher and more profound than common sense. It carries a prerequisite for the hearer, that you love the truth. Otherwise you can miss it entirely.
“This man (of lawlessness) will come to do the work of Satan with counterfeit power and signs and miracles. He will use every kind of evil deception to fool those on their way to destruction, because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them. So God will cause them to be greatly deceived, and they will believe these lies. Then they will be condemned for enjoying evil rather than believing the truth.” 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 NLT
So, do you know the five self-evident truths in the Declaration?
- All men are created equal.
- The Creator grants rights to all people.
- These rights include life.
- These rights include liberty.
- These rights include the pursuit of happiness.
Bible believers know that truth is not only a concept, it is the person of Jesus, the Messiah.
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 NLT
“But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness. They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.” Romans 1:18-20 NLT
Wow! That is a pretty clear statement that the truth about God is obvious. As we pray for our nation in this time of crises, pray that people will gain a love of the truth. God desires to show mercy if we only repent of our self love and cry out to Him. Cry out for Jesus, the Truth, the Life-giver.
Also, continue to pray for the peace of Jerusalem and rain in season.

Endowed by the Creator
9 12 2020This is bigger than the Biden gaff, where he famously fumbled “endowed by the Creator” and instead said: “the thing, you know, you know, the thing.” There is a war in the heavenlies between forces of darkness and the light of Yehovah God shining through His Son, Yeshua. Anti-God folks also like to leave out “under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance. This is intentional, not accidental. Their beef is with God Himself. The current leftist anarchists attempting to overthrow the government echo the same motive we find in Psalm 83 where the attack against Israel is really the rejection of Yehovah.
Notice the words in bold emphasis. They try to destroy Israel because they can’t reach God, but it is He that they hate. In the foundation of the United States we have the Declaration of Independence. The context is critical. The fresh new country being established was directly opposing the “Divine right of Kings,” which was their issue with England and necessitated the “separation” from the monarchy. Thus, belief in God and His impartation of “certain inalienable rights” was the background producing this declaration. Please consider carefully the Declaration’s references to God in the first two paragraphs. (I have added numbers to emphasize the five self-evident truths.)
Now this brings us to the responsibility of free speech. By this I mean our necessary speech when government seeks to limit our God given rights. This is the over arching authority of God. When possible we submit to rule and authority of man with the understanding that they are ordained by God. But when the authority requires us to disobey God, we must disobey the authority. Free speech is not free if we are told not to preach. Here is the clear Bible basis for civil disobedience.
Pray for our nation, speak the truth without fear of man. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Pray for Israel’s seasonal rains to come in abundance.
