There are two levels of offense. The surface level is when you are insulted or just rubbed the wrong way. The cure for that is easy, but the second level is much harder. The Lord showed me a little mini vision years ago about the concept of “taking offense.” He showed me a silver tray with an assortment of offenses that was being offered to me on a daily basis. I usually picked one and carried it awhile even though it always left a bitter after taste. Then He suggested that the next time I was offered an offense on a silver platter, I could just politely refuse “to take one.” In my mind I could just say: “Thank you, I have had enough offenses.” Just don’t accept the opportunity to get offended. Wow, what a concept! That is easy.
The second level is much harder. What about when a brother or sister really does sin against you? How do you handle that? Now we need to look to Jesus for the answer. This is one of the most ignored Scriptures in the Bible. Many otherwise good Christians totally fail to follow this clear instruction from the Gospel of Matthew. There are four distinct steps to take, but some just mistakenly skip to step four.
Go to them alone and privately.
Take a friend.
Tell the church.
Have nothing to do with them.
“Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.”Matthew 18:15-17
Most Christians skip right over #1. That is the major error that leads to much division and misunderstanding in churches. The effect of the offense is multiplied by telling someone else first. It creates dissension in the body, when it could have been dealt with privately and no one else would need to know. Ninety per cent of offenses are forgiven if you obey step one! If he hears you, you have gained your brother.
“For the report of your obedience has reached to all; therefore I am rejoicing over you, but I want you to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.” Romans 16:19-20 NASB95
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! And pray for our leaders (and us as well) that we will hear from God and have courage to do the right thing at the right time.
