My title today is the tongue-in-cheek history of the Jewish people. The DNA of Israel contains a deep and sometimes hidden awareness of God’s Hand on them. History has proven that against all odds they still exist as a people and a nation. Only God could have preserved them through all the mighty empires and individual haters who tried to utterly destroy them. Yet, they are here. And they are winning. Because God is with them.
“Do not keep silent, O God! Do not hold Your peace, and do not be still, O God! For behold, Your enemies make a tumult; and those who hate You have lifted up their head. They have taken crafty counsel against Your people, and consulted together against Your sheltered ones. They have said, “Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more.”Psalm 83:1-4
The Psalm continues with an appeal to God that He deal with Israel’s enemies as He did with the Midianites in Gideon’s day. They fought and killed each other by God’s intervention. We see the same today. If Iran could have managed to get the Arabs on their side, they could have defeated Israel. But, instead, they split up and now the Arabs are fighting WITH Israel! Wow, only God!
The Dry Bones cartoon today reveals another reason the Jews survive. Humor. It would be good for all of us to lighten up once in a while.
