Disturbing the Peace?

5 02 2026

What ever happened to “disturbing the peace”? Minneapolis protests make a lot of noise. What if they gave fines to anyone disturbing the peace? Horns honking, whistles blowing, banging on pans, cursing, and amplified bull horns does not sound peaceful. Regardless of the cause of the day, shouldn’t the police enforce noise ordinances? Our traditional laws and guidelines have been unenforced to such a degree that we really don’t have laws anymore. Lawlessness is threatening our peace. A simple noise ordinance enforced would go a long way in returning peace to our streets.

“Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.” Matthew 23:28 “And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.” Matthew 24:12

These are the words of Jesus. Virtue signaling is revealed by the lawlessness that is part of the package. Our constitution guarantees the right of peaceful assembly, but when you remove the peaceful part you step into lawlessness. Civil disobedience is accepted but submits to arrest and consequences. Today’s “protestors” are rebellious rioters and violators of the peace. But there is a further point here. Disturbing the peace is also an attack on the spiritual promises of peace given by God. He promises perfect peace.

“Open the gates, that the righteous nation which keeps the truth may enter in. You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in Yehovah forever, For in YAH, Yehovah, is everlasting strength.” Isaiah 26:2-4

The phrase “perfect peace” in English is quite revealing in the original Hebrew. It is shalom, shalom! The word shalom is repeated. The English translators chose to render it as “perfect peace.” I like to think of it as shalom squared or shalom times shalom. Either way, it is an extraordinary peace. When our culture breaks down into lawlessness, many are disturbed and may even lose their peace out of fear and confusion. But our God promised us His perfect peace even in the storms of life. It is known by believers as a supernatural calm or peace even in hard times. Doreen and I experienced that peace when our house burned down in 2001.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

I have my own paraphrase of peace that surpasses understanding. I call it peace that doesn’t make sense. When the circumstances justify losing it, but you have this inner calm, this knowing that God is with you no matter what. Logically you should freak out, but the Holy Spirit of God says: “It will be okay. I saw this coming, and I have a plan for you!” Hallelujah! I hope you have found this peace in the Messiah Yeshua.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem and especially for our leaders to hear from God, have courage, and do the right thing regarding Iran.
